Course outcomes
On completion of this course, participants will:
- Be able to communicate life-altering news in a sensitive but effective way and be capable of managing difficult patients or family members through effective communication. • Be aware of the common barriers to effective communication between health care practitioners and patients and be able to use specific strategies to influence patients to provide information necessary for their treatment.
- Have strategies to promote effective communication among staff to avoid inadvertent medical errors and patient harm caused by poor communication.
- Understand the importance of effective listening and increase their awareness of non-verbal communication cues.
Course format
The course is a combination of classroom time and learning workshops. Classroom sessions are intensive and participative and will include a variety of approaches such as lectures, group discussions and practical exercises. A number of guest lecturers will also make presentations, aiding the overall learning experience.
